My square mile

My Square Mile was initiated by the Design Commission for Wales to encourage the use of the local built environment as an educational resource. It explores relationships between buildings, space and people to develop design awareness. It helps children understand how the environment is shaped and managed. It celebrates local distinctiveness and local identity. It nurtures emotional attachments and belonging-a sense of place. It raises issues about what the environment might be like in the future.

This interactive resource introduces pupils to shapes and patterns. There are a series of activities, all of which test pupils' ability to place shapes in a particular order. Pupils will also learn to differentiate between colours. The lesson can be simulated in the classroom using building blocks.

This resource pack revises the use of a thesaurus to choose appropriate synonyms and demonstrates how the choice of words can change the shade of meaning in poetry. Pupils can use the interactive activity to create their own concrete poem using a typical Welsh image as a background to build their poem upon and then print out the completed version. Alternatively the activity could be used for whole class demonstration before printing out backgrounds for the children to write their poem on.

The unit is split into three sections giving information about the effects of waste on the environment and interactive games that allow pupils to learn how to minimise those effects. Section 1 introduces the pupils to the concepts of reducing, re-using and recycling waste to help overcome the negative effects on the environment. Section 2 has a timed interactive game where pupils need to decide whether different items of waste are suitable for reusing, reducing or recycling. Section 3 has an interactive game to teach pupils about the type of recycling bank different items should be placed in.
